Height Reduction / Crown Reduction
Crown reduction is the selected removal of branch tips which allows the size and shape of the tree to be managed and maintained. End weight is also reduced which mitigates hazards of branch failure and splitting.
If this is carried out correctly, you will enjoy many years of low maintenance healthy trees. Many cut price operators offer ‘topping’ of trees to manage height and regain views. This is a damaging practice, as it involves cutting a high percentage of the growth off the tree, causing reactive growth and stress on the tree. The resulting fast growth rate of the shoots means the form of the tree is normally lost, and repeat pruning or hedge trimming is often needed. Many species also will go into decline after such severe topping.
At TreeZone we talk through with you the implications of taking too much off the crown of the tree and talk through what other options may get you the desired result whilst maintaining the health and form of the tree.
